Rev. Dr. Edwin Holmes

Edwin H. Holmes is a native Detroiter.  He earned a Bachelor of Science degree in Finance from the University of Houston in 1989.  

Rev. Holmes received his call to the ministry in 1989 and served as an Associate Minister at the Pleasant Grove Missionary Baptist Church in Houston, Texas from 1989-1993.  In 1993, Rev. Holmes returned to Detroit, Michigan and united with Hartford Memorial Baptist Church, where he served as an Assistant to the Pastor in Men’s Ministry.

In May 2002, Rev. Holmes received a Masters of Divinity from Garrett Evangelical Theological Seminary and was also called to serve as the Senior Pastor of Renaissance Baptist Church where he continues to teach, preach, pray, baptize, and encourage.  In May of 2005, Reverend Dr. Holmes received his Doctor of Ministry at the Ecumenical Theological Seminary in Detroit.

Rev. Dr. Holmes teaches Introduction to Philosophy and Comparative Religions at Wayne County Community College and teaches dual-enrollment classes at local high schools.  He is also an on-call Chaplain in the pastoral care department of Beaumont-Botsford Hospital.

On September 14, 2014, Rev. Dr. Holmes was proudly installed as President of the Michigan Progressive Baptist Convention (MPBC).  His vision for the MPBC is to create an atmosphere of fellowship, love, and peace, to defend against social injustice, and to equip Pastors with resources to become a strong voice for the voiceless.  Before, becoming MPBC President, Rev. Dr. Holmes served as 1st Vice President.  He led his Church family’s successful team effort in hosting the 2013, 47th Annual Session, as well as serving as chairperson for the special events committee for the 2013, 52nd Annual Session of the Progressive National Baptist Convention. He also currently serves as Treasurer for the Council of Baptist Pastors of Detroit and vicinity and is active with the Detroit Clergy Gathering Committee.  This past January, he was blessed to travel to Israel on a mission’s trip with the International Fellowship for Christian and Jews, a Christian organization.  During this trip Dr. Holmes was able to visit a military base and Ethiopian girls’ home, as well as box rice for the under-privileged while working in a pantry kitchen.  Dr. Holmes had also visited the Holy Land in 2011.  At that time, he was given the amazing opportunity to preach a sermon.

Pastor Holmes is married to Reverend Dr. Shannon A. Holmes and was filled with joy when he was blessed to ordain his wife in ministry and within a few months later, see her receive a Doctorate in Ministry.  They are the proud parents of three amazing children Troy (wife–Autumn), Jordan, and Joi Ivory; and have two beautiful grandchildren.

Pastor Holmes enjoys movies, playing golf, and time spent with his adorable grandchildren.
