History of Renaissance

On Sunday, June 20, 1982 it was made known that Rev. Robert Holloman, Jr. was voted out of the pastoral position at Second Baptist Church of Detroit, Michigan. Following that very crucial vote, Michael Patterson, Deacons Joel Hackett and Lemuel Stanfield, Sheila Davis and others met to call the people together to consider the alternatives. The alternatives were to remain at Second Baptist, affiliate with other church(es) in the city, or organize our own church.

During the following week a meeting was held and the response from a standing room only crowd was overwhelmingly in favor of organization a church. This was a time of sadness; it was as if a divorce had taken place. A family had been split.

Starting a new church gave us hope of beginning a new family, and creating a new home. It was a time of prayer and a true testing of our faith. An organizational meeting was held with prayer. In this meeting although 17 names were presented, the name of our new family, our new church body was identified as Renaissance Baptist Church.

Our church began with 330 members in 1982 and worshipping at Burns Avenue Seventh Day Adventist with a “packed” house regularly.  The prayer breakfast and dedication in October of 1982 carried the theme “We’ve Come this Far by Faith”. In June 1983 (30 years ago) a glimpse of God’s faithfulness crept out yet again. We believe the angels had gathered to march with us in celebration and hear Rev. Holloman preach; “Proof that the Hand of the Lord is Mighty.” Renaissance Baptist Church was electrified.

One of the most historic events occurred on June 7, 1987. We celebrated our 5th church anniversary with 514 members and the mortgage burning ceremonies.

Pastor Holloman served faithfully until his illness. Preceding his illness, Rev. Robert Paige served as acting pastor until the church elected Rev. Jerome P. Stevenson to serve as pastor until September 2000. Thereafter, God’s faithful servant, Rev. Dale Weathers served as Interim Pastor as he has continued to remain faithful to Renaissance Baptist Church.

On Sunday, May 19, 2002 Rev. Dr. Edwin H. Holmes was elected as the third pastor of Renaissance Baptist Church. He has truly been a blessing to us, faithfully walking with us for over 10 years! Under his leadership many new programs/ministries have been established/re-committed, including but not limited to Tutorial Program, Praise & Worship Teams, Mime Ministry, Various Bible Studies, a Prayer Line and so much more. thank God for his vision and the shepherd he has sent us as we continue to do the work of Him that sent us, understanding that we are all children of God with a purpose.
